Introducing, ‘The Athlete’ by the incredibly talented Issa Ouattara.
At 40, Issa’s incredible smile and generosity of spirit belie his difficult start to his life. As a child of a broken family in the Ivory Coast in West Africa, Issa had no education and became homeless as a young adolescent.
At age 15 his life was changed forever when he met French Artist and Sculptor Michelle. She soon became Issa’s mentor and shared with him her passion and skills for sculpture and creative arts. Issa became more than an assistant and developed his own unique style working with his favorite metal media.
Fast forward to now and we’re lucky to have Issa living in our own beautiful town of Daylesford with his wife, and two children.
Recently, we met Issa at his home and fell instantly in love with his artwork, and infectious smile.
‘The Athlete’ has just been installed at Mercato, and is a large figurative sculpture. Issa has done a series of large sculptural works conveying upward and forward motion. Each unique and all inspired by the idea of learning from the past and embracing and creating a positive future.
Be sure to pop by to admire the piece with a glass of wine and bite to eat.
